What 'cranking' actually means
When you turn the key or press the start button, your battery spins the starter motor, which turns the engine over. That sound is 'cranking.' If the engine is spinning but won't fire, it means the starter is doing its job, but the engine is missing one of three critical elements: fuel, spark, or compression. This distinction is vital for accurate diagnostics.
If the engine does not make any sound when you turn the key, that is a different problem usually related to the battery, starter, or security system.
Is it a fuel delivery problem?
The most common reason an engine cranks but won't start is a lack of fuel. The fuel pump might be failing, the fuel filter could be clogged, or the fuel pump relay might have burnt out. Listen carefully: turn the key to the 'ON' position (without starting) and listen for a faint hum for a few seconds. That's your fuel pump priming the system. If you hear nothing, you have a solid lead.
We use pressure gauges to verify that your fuel pump is delivering the correct pressure to the engine.
Missing spark?
Without a spark at the right time, the fuel/air mixture will not ignite. This can be caused by bad spark plugs, faulty ignition coils, or a failed crankshaft position sensor. In modern cars, a computer monitors these sensors; if it doesn't get the right signal, it will cut off fuel or spark to prevent engine damage. We can use a scan tool to read the specific fault code.
This is often the reason for 'no-start' conditions and is easily diagnosed with the right equipment.
Compression and timing
In more severe cases, an engine may not have the internal pressure (compression) needed for combustion. This can be caused by a broken timing belt, a blown head gasket, or burnt valves. While less common, these issues are serious and require a comprehensive diagnostic approach to confirm.
A timing belt failure is the worst-case scenario and often results in significant internal engine damage.
Check your key and immobilizer
Modern vehicles have an immobilizer system that prevents the engine from starting if the key or fob isn't recognized. Sometimes, a weak key fob battery or an issue with the receiver will prevent the car from starting. If your dash is flashing a security light or showing a 'key not detected' message, this is likely your problem.
Try your spare key before calling for help.

Frequently asked questions
Is a bad fuel pump expensive to fix?
It depends on the vehicle. In some cases, the pump is inside the fuel tank, which requires removing the tank, increasing labor costs.
Why would a crankshaft sensor cause a no-start?
The sensor tells the computer where the engine is in its cycle. Without this, the computer doesn't know when to fire the spark or inject fuel.
Can I try to start it with starter fluid?
You can, but it is dangerous and can damage the engine if done improperly. We don't recommend this for non-mechanics.
How long does a diagnostic take?
A professional diagnostic typically takes 1–2 hours to isolate the root cause.
