Listen to what your car is telling you
Rapid clicking usually means a weak battery. A single click points to the starter. Cranking without starting suggests fuel or ignition issues. Complete silence may be a dead battery or bad connection.
1. Dead or weak battery
The most common cause, especially in Houston where heat shortens battery life to 2–4 years. Corroded terminals can mimic a dead battery.
2. Failing alternator
If your car dies while driving, or the battery keeps going flat after a jump, the alternator may not be charging.
3. Bad starter motor
A single click with full dash lights is a classic starter failure. Tapping the starter sometimes gets it going temporarily.
4–5. Fuel pump or clogged filter
If the engine cranks but won't fire, listen for the fuel pump hum when you turn the key to ON. No hum may mean a failed pump or relay.
6–7. Ignition switch or security system
Faulty ignition switches and key fob immobilizer problems can prevent starting. Try your spare key first.
Get help without a tow
A mobile mechanic can test the battery, alternator, and starter onsite — and usually replace the failed part on the spot, saving you a tow bill.
