What the check engine light actually is
The check engine light (malfunction indicator lamp) turns on when your car's computer detects a fault in the engine, emissions, or transmission systems. It stores a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that a scan tool can read.
The light itself doesn't tell you how serious the problem is — the code and the symptoms do.
Steady vs. flashing light
A steady light means a fault was detected and should be checked soon. It's usually safe to drive short-term.
A flashing light means an active engine misfire. Unburned fuel can overheat and destroy your catalytic converter — a $1,000+ repair. Pull over safely and call a mechanic.
Most common causes
Loose or damaged gas cap (code P0455/P0457).
Failing oxygen sensors, which hurt fuel economy.
Worn spark plugs or ignition coils causing misfires (P0300–P0308).
Mass airflow sensor contamination.
Catalytic converter efficiency below threshold (P0420).
Houston-specific factors
Extreme heat accelerates wear on ignition coils, vacuum hoses, and sensors. Harris County and surrounding counties also require emissions testing, so an illuminated check engine light means your car will fail inspection.
What to do next
Tighten your gas cap and drive a few days. If the light stays on, get a professional diagnosis. A mobile mechanic can scan your car in your driveway and explain the fix before you spend a dollar on parts.
