Squealing or squeaking
Most pads include a metal wear indicator that squeals when the pad is nearly gone. It's your early warning.
Grinding
Grinding means metal-on-metal. The pad is gone and the rotor is being damaged. Repair cost roughly doubles at this stage.
Vibration or pulsing pedal
Usually warped or unevenly worn rotors. Common in stop-and-go Houston traffic.
Soft or spongy pedal
Can indicate air in the lines, a fluid leak, or a failing master cylinder. This is a safety emergency.
Car pulls to one side
A stuck caliper or collapsed hose can cause uneven braking.
Brake warning light
Low fluid or an ABS fault. Have it checked right away.
What brake repair costs
Pads typically run $150–$250 per axle; pads and rotors $300–$450. Mobile service costs about the same as a shop — without the wait.
